Land surveying with a chain and cross staff, one of the ancient method in the field.

It involves measuring distances using a metal chain composed of 100 links, each measuring 20m of total length and involves cross staff to make perpendiculars on the ground.

This simple technique also known as chaining, has been very essential in boundary determination of a property and mapping on the paper.

Surveyors can run the chain between the two points, ensuring it is level and straight, to accurately measure the distance.

Despite the advent of modern technologies, chaining remains a fundamental skill, offering a hands-on approach to understanding surveying principles and the land itself.
